I am asked very often two questions when people find out I work with crystals:
1. I love crystals, what should I start with?
2. I want to learn more! What books do you recommend?
These questions are extremely common and I felt it was time to make a blog about what books I found the most useful and why.
Each person learns a little differently, some need more hands on while others prefer to learn ahead before jumping into activities. I am one of the people that want to learn before I play, and then add to the information pre gathered based off experience. I rarely get a new stone and skip going on a hunt for all the information on it. I want to know what others have found out about it so I can decide if the stone works in that manner for me.
Crystal healing is 50% research and 50% personal experience. You need a baseline to understand how this stone may flourish and then you need to try it out! Sometimes a book will advise a stone can be used for one chakra or organ, when in reality for me it works better at a different placement. So Use the information from others to get an idea, but stay open minded to how that stone will want to influence you.
Now for the books:
1. The Book of Stones by Robert Simmons & Naisha Ashian.

This book has become one of my favorites. It has a wide range of stones with a extended edition now available. It has large colorful pictures for help with identification which is handy when you’re first starting out and learning the names. This book also gives large explanations of properties and uses from both Robert Summons and Naisha Ashian, so you get duel points for each stone. There also is a space at the bottom for uses including Spiritual, physical, mental, and emotional uses.
2. Love is in the Earth by Melody.

This book was actually the first book I was ever gifted about crystals at my high school graduation by a lovely soul who saw I had a connection to crystals. This book gives information such as the metaphysical properties of stones, their vibrational frequency, and the element they work with. My edition does not have photos but there are some newer ones that do. Because of the fact that my book does not have pictures it means you will need to remember the names of the stone you acquired long enough to look it up, so there is less help with identification vs some others I will mention.
3. The Crystal Bible by Judy Hall

Judy Hall is one of my favorite crystal authors. She is colorful and has easy to digest information regarding hundreds of stones. This was my second book I received on my journey and since then she has expanded her editions to at least 2 additional volumes. This book has pictures and short but accurate information on each stone. New crystal lovers can get a little overwhelmed when each stone has 3 pages worth of properties. These little books has information on the geometric makeup, where it’s mined, what chakra it associates with and a small explanation of a couple properties. It also is a small book so it’s easy to take with you to gem shows or crystal shops to keep as an easy reference.
4. Crystal Healing by Judy Hall

As a beginner Judy Hall became one of my fav authors for her simplicity and ease of explanation with crystal healing. This little book was the first one that taught me some ways to actually USE my crystals I have acquired and not just told me what the properties or healing attributes are. With pictures for examples I was able to start doing small things such as medicine pouches, simple layouts, and even touched a little on crystal elixirs. For someone who is ready to start using their collection of stones, this would be a book I would recommend for ease into a crystal healing routine.
5. Crystal Lore, Legends and Myths By Athena Perrakis.

I really enjoyed this book by one of my favorite teachers in the field of metaphysical and healing. It is less on how to use a stone and more on how the history of the stones came about. The reason for their names, how ancient civilizations would use them, and why stones are still loved today. Although it’s less instructional I feel it has a solid base for the history behind stones and therefore is useful to someone starting out to have a better understanding on crystal healing.
6. The Complete Illustrated guide to Crystal Healing by Simon Lilly.

This book was a pleasant surprise from Barns and Noble. A $10 book that was full of really nice clear information on Crystals and their healing abilities. It explains WHY crystals work, HOW they form, and ways to use them in crystal healing. It has layouts, Meditations, and additional information that I felt was unique and a fresh look at crystal healing.
There are millions of books out there, I haven’t even put a dent in reading them all. But I have found these few that really impressed me and I feel have good value for new people or seasoned practitioners that want to expand their knowledge. I try to always continue my education and by doing that you find favorites. I hope you end up coming across a few of these books and giving them your attention. If you love crystals and crystal healing as much as me, they will serve you beautifully in your journey.
